Customer Review: It *still* doesn't get any better than this.
Summary: 5 Stars
We've had our Saeco Magic Deluxe for about three years now,
so I thought I'd update my original review to include our
experience with having it serviced. We still use the machine
at least twice a day. We love it, and give it 4 1/2 stars.
First and foremost, it makes *great* coffee. You can choose
espressos, tall espressos or regular coffee, and all are
consistently excellent. The milk frothing attachment is
also very good, although we've found that it helps to heat
the milk a little first.
Secondly, it's very convenient to use. With one push of
a button, the beans are ground, the coffee is made, and
the grounds are dispensed into a waste container. No coffee
grounds to deal with, no cleanup. There's also a separate
coffee receptacle for ground coffee, which we use for
decaf, to save having to empty the regular beans.
Indicator lights show you when the beans or water have to
be refilled, or when the waste container needs to be emptied.
Occasionally, you have to remove and rinse the interior unit,
but it no big deal after the first couple of times.
There are a few things about the unit that dropped our rating
by half a star:
* the lever for adjusting the amount of coffee to be ground
per cup is inside the machine, which is quite inconvenient.
* the ground coffee receptacle only holds enough for one cup.
If you try to put more coffee in, the mechanism gets clogged
with ground coffee.
During the last three years, we've had to have the boiler
replaced once, because we didn't descale often enough.
The 800 service rep was very helpful and informative when
we called, and we were lucky enough to have a service center
about 30 minutes' drive away. The job was a bit pricey, but
a fraction of the cost of a new machine, so we were happy
to have it done. We now descale once every 2 months, and
so far, so good.
(Saeco have greatly increased the number of centers in the
country over the last couple of years, but it's worth checking
to see if there's one near you. You don't want to have to
ship this system anywhere - it's heavy - and you should assume
it will need *something* done to it during the first few years).
If you enjoy coffee, and can afford the extravagance, we
highly recommend this coffee maker. You'll enjoy excellent,
convenient coffee from it every day.

Made in Italy, this 1,250-watt espresso machine automates the espresso-making process, eliminating the fuss involved. It grinds coffee beans without burning them, tamps the ground coffee, brews, and then dumps spent grounds into a container--all in about 30 seconds. For making a cappuccino or latté, there's a hot water/steam wand with a milk-frothing attachment. This Magic DeLuxe model has a number of features not available on Saeco's Vienna models: a button to select a triple espresso in addition to a single or double; a funnel separate from the grinder that permits the use of any preground coffee (decaf, for example, when everyone else wants regular); a heated surface on top the machine for keeping cups warm; illuminated function buttons; lights that follow the brewing process; and an indicator for when the drip tray needs emptying.Users can select the amount of ground coffee per dose (6 to 9 grams), and have the option of filling cups of several sizes--up to 10 ounces. The machine measures 15-1/2 inches high, 13 inches wide, and 16 inches deep, weighs 30 pounds, rotates on a swivel base, and, with a silver and black exterior, looks great on the counter. The bean hopper holds about 12-1/2 ounces (8.8 ounces of espresso beans are included), and the removable, transparent water tank holds 82 ounces. The grinder is adjustable--from fine to coarse. Parts remove easily for cleanup. The machine comes with an exceptionally thorough and clear instruction booklet and an instruction video. It carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack
